Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Production Pottery

Production Pottery: 

  • Throw, hand build and finish the assigned pottery pieces in a timely manner at our standing wheels
  • Maintain the finesse of each piece while striving to throw more efficiently to maximize quantity and quality of production run
  • Train alongside the master potters to achieve consistency across the product line
  • Maintain a clean and safe studio environment by adhering to our cleaning procedures and schedules
  • Once trained, load and unload kilns on a regular or rotating basis
  • Studio potters are a part of the overall production process and team - as part of the production team, there may be a need to help within different areas of the department: glazing, waxing, etc.
  • Any other duties as required

Customer Interactions: 

  • Embracing the open studio and responding to customer questions and comments appropriately and with enthusiasm
  • Educating the customer about the Farmhouse Pottery brand and production technique
  • Maintaining tidy work space during open studio hours to improve customer experience  

Wheel Workshops: 

These are personal workshops with our potters where we teach participants how to throw pottery and guide an interactive experience. Guests get the chance to create their very own artisan souvenir which we finish and ship to them. Workshops are available twice a day and are assigned to our master potters on a rotating basis.

  • Upon completion of proper training, teach wheel workshops as scheduled to the FHP standard
  • Set up and break down of wheel workshop equipment and supplies
  • Fill out wheel workshop paperwork properly and write thank you card
  • Trim and finish workshop pieces and get them in queue for the kilns

Requirements: 

  • Prior throwing experience; candidates will show their wheel skills in an interview
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Willingness to work 40+ hours a week, possibly including weekends

Physical Requirements: 

  • Frequently carry, raise or lower objects up to 40 pounds from one level to another regularly

● Assist in executing creative projects that align with brand guidelines and marketing goals
● Collaborate with marketing, e-commerce, and sales teams to support cohesive

General Marketing & Graphic Support:

Farmhouse Pottery is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Kiln Room Assistant to support the daily operations of our high-volume production pottery studio. This role is responsible for executing the routine tasks that keep our kiln room running smoothly, including kiln loading and unloading, pottery finishing, and maintaining kiln room organization.

Working closely with the Kiln Technician and Production team, the Kiln Room Assistant helps ensure that approximately 70,000 pieces of hand-thrown pottery move efficiently through the firing process each year. The ideal candidate is hands-on, organized, comfortable with repetitive physical tasks, and committed to maintaining high quality standards.

Core Responsibilities:

Kiln Room Operations:

  • Assist with the daily loading and unloading of three 41-cubic-foot production kilns.
  • Transport greenware and bisque ware safely between studio workstations and the kiln
    room.
  • Organize kiln loads according to direction from the Kiln Technician to maximize
    efficiency and maintain firing quality.
  • Assist with periodic restacking and organization of kiln cars.

Pottery Finishing

  • Grind and finish fired pottery to ensure smooth, consistent bases.
  • Tag and sort seconds according to Farmhouse Pottery quality standards.
  • Organize finished pieces for the next stage of production.

Kiln Room Maintenance

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized kiln workspace.
  • Assist with basic kiln and kiln equipment upkeep tasks such as shelf scraping and
    general kiln room cleaning for dust mitigation.
  • Support general studio maintenance tasks as needed.

Production Support

  • Assist with material handling and moving pottery throughout the studio.
  • Support the Production and Kiln Teams to ensure steady workflow through the firing
    process.
  • Help maintain organization of kiln furniture, shelves, and firing tools.
  • Participate in studio cleanup and organization efforts.

Health & Safety

  • Follow all studio safety procedures and kiln room best practices.
  • Use appropriate PPE when grinding pottery or handling fired materials.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a ceramics studio, manufacturing environment, or hands-on workshop preferred but not required.
  • Comfortable with repetitive production tasks and working with fragile handmade
    products.
  • Ability to lift and move pottery, kiln shelves, and materials throughout the day.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Ability to follow established systems and instructions while contributing to team
    success.

Position Summary:
The Studio Production Assistant supports the daily operations of the production studio by
preparing materials, maintaining studio equipment and workspaces, and assisting potters, glazers, and decorators with essential production needs. This role helps ensure the efficiency and organization of the studio through clay preparation, handle production, laundry maintenance, and general studio support. The position requires strong attention to detail, time management, and the ability to perform physical tasks in an active production environment.

Core Responsibilities:

Material Preparation

  • Review daily clay requests from our team of potters, and portion clay for them
    accordingly.
  • Organize prepared clay on labeled trays, and deliver them to designated potters.
  • Maintain healthy levels of colored slips seasonally to support our Decorative Surface Painter.

Handle Production

  • Produce clay handles using the studio extruder according to daily specifications
    provided by potters.
  • Ensure all handles are properly labeled and stored in the damp room for subsequent use.

Studio Maintenance and Organization

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization across studio work areas, including clay
    preparation stations, wedging tables, extruders, floors and more.
  • Clean and properly store tools and machinery after use.
  • Assist in recycling clay scraps.
  • Clean and maintain ware boards and ware carts used in the production process.
  • Ensure boards are properly sanitized, dried, and returned to their designated storage areas.

Laundry

  • Manage studio laundry including aprons and towels used in daily production.
  • Maintain inventory of laundry supplies, and communicate low stock to the Assistant Production Manager.

Production Support

  • Assist with finishing work and other production needs as directed by one of our trainers or the Assistant Production Manager.
  • Assist the Decorative Surface Painter in applying colored slips, underglazes, and wax resist with precision and consistency.
  • Partner with Assistant Production Manager to understand studio dependencies and anticipate workflow needs.
  • Support studio workflow expediently as production priorities shift throughout the week.


Qualifications

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently
  • Comfort working in a physically active, team-oriented production environment
  • Willingness to learn studio equipment operation

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and move heavy materials (up to 50 lbs), including clay logs
  • Frequent standing, bending, and repetitive hand movements
  • Ability to safely operate studio tools and equipment

Work Environment:
This position operates within an active ceramics production studio where employees regularly work with clay (materials with silica), water, and studio equipment in a collaborative craft
environment.
