Frequently Asked Questions

  • When is the Online Seconds Sale?
It begins at 10am EST on Friday, May 27th and runs through 11:59pm EST Monday, May 30th! Mark your calendars, set your alarms, make your wishlist, and get ready to shop our THIRD ever online seconds sale this Memorial Day Weekend! We recommend shopping early - limited quantities are available and we will sell out quickly!
  • What will be on sale?
The sale will feature pottery seconds, home accent seconds, and select discontinued merchandise. Spring Sale items are discounted 30% off retail, with potential deeper discounts throughout the weekend.
  • What is a "second"?
Seconds are pieces that don't pass our quality control standards to be sold at full price. Seconds may have minor surface defects, color inconsistencies, or other variations that reflect the handmade nature of most of our products. Seconds items are still safe for use, beautiful, and authentically handmade.
  • Can I ask for a specific type of second, or make other requests about the specific items I'll receive? Can I call and put items on hold?
Due to the incredibly high volume we experience during our Seconds Sale, we aren't able to accommodate these requests. We will not be able to process phone orders during this time. If you have specific requests, we encourage you to call Customer Care about your request later in the summer when our seconds inventory has been replenished.
  • How long will items in my cart be reserved? Can I add items I might want to my cart, then return later to make the purchase?
Items in your cart will not be reserved. We recommend you select the pieces you want and complete your purchase as soon as possible. We can't guarantee items in your cart will still be available - with a limited quantity available on all of the pieces, these items will sell out fast!
  • Will more items or inventory be added to the sale throughout the weekend?
No. Everything will go live at 10am EST, but depending on stock, additional surprise discounts may be available throughout the event!
  • Can I add, edit, or combine my orders?
Unfortunately, due to the high volume this weekend, we cannot add to or combine orders. We know you may decide to visit the website again and encourage you to place additional orders to ensure you get the pieces you want. Please remember to review all shipping information carefully, in the event an address or order change is absolutely necessary please let us know.
  • Are you having an in-store seconds sale as well?
Our retail stores feature seconds throughout the year! During this weekend they will be hosting an additional sale, however the main seconds sale, with the most variety, is online.
  • Will I be able to get price adjustments on Seconds Spring Sale purchase if any items are discounted throughout the weekend?
No refunds will be issued. We hope you join us early to get the pieces you want before they sell out. Additional discounts may appear as the weekend progresses, but stock will be limited. Discounts will not be retroactively applied.
  • Can I return seconds pieces?
No. All seconds are final sale. No returns, exchanges, or refunds will be issued.
  • Is Free Shipping Sitewide?
YES! Receive FREE Standard Shipping on any orders $250+ (valid on shipping within the US only). Additional orders cannot be combined.

  • How long will it take to receive my shipment with "standard ground"?
*Standard Ground – please allow 7-10 days to receive your order. The fulfillment team will be working hard but you may experience an additional delay from our usual window due to high demand.
*Expedited – we will process these orders a bit quicker but there will still be a bit of a fulfillment delay.

What Makes a Second?

Every piece is touched at least twenty-five times during production by our master potters. Our team inspects each piece carefully before deciding if it is first or second quality. A combination of minor imperfections in the following categories can make a piece a second, but there are also some pieces that have a singular flaw as pictured below.

These images were taken to show some of the extremes within our seconds section to educate our customers, whose support we are so grateful for! Each piece embodies the handmade nature of Farmhouse Pottery, and we celebrate their individuality by sharing these one-of-a-kind pieces with our customers.

Our team’s top concern is to ensure that each piece is safe to use and fully functional before earning a place in your home. We like to think of our seconds as having some extra personality!

Form

The seconds that fall under the category of form usually come from our hands-on process, and we expect there to be a level of variation.  These types of production flaws alter the pots from their intended final form, thus making them seconds.

Form examples include slightly misshapen, warping, irregular stamping, and small stress cracks.

What Makes a Second Form
What Makes a Second Material

Material

The seconds that fall under the category of material occur as a result of natural material melting and bleeding through the glaze during the firing process. Depending on the size, intensity and location of one of these discrepancies, will depend on whether a piece is considered first or second quality. The larger a pot becomes, the more area there is for variation to occur on the surface.

Glaze

After a pot is finished in the studio and bisque fired, it is glazed, stacked into the kiln, and unloaded by our kiln team of master potters. Each of our pots is glazed by hand! The seconds that fall under the glazing category are created during this part of our process. When loading glazed pieces into a kiln, glaze can sometimes chip off, exposing a small area of raw clay.

Even though a piece may be missing a patch of glaze, each pot is still fully functional because we fire our claybody to its proper temperature. When a claybody is fully fired it becomes vitrified, keeping all of our pieces completely food safe!
