What Makes a Second?

Every piece is touched at least twenty-five times during production by our master potters. Our team inspects each piece carefully before deciding if it is first or second quality. A combination of minor imperfections in the following categories can make a piece a second, but there are also some pieces that have a singular flaw as pictured below.

These images were taken to show some of the extremes within our seconds section to educate our customers, whose support we are so grateful for! Each piece embodies the handmade nature of Farmhouse Pottery, and we celebrate their individuality by sharing these one-of-a-kind pieces with our customers.

Our team’s top concern is to ensure that each piece is safe to use and fully functional before earning a place in your home. We like to think of our seconds as having some extra personality!

Form

The seconds that fall under the category of form usually come from our hands-on process, and we expect there to be a level of variation.  These types of production flaws alter the pots from their intended final form, thus making them seconds.

Form examples include slightly misshapen, warping, irregular stamping, and small stress cracks.

What Makes a Second Form
What Makes a Second Material

Material

The seconds that fall under the category of material occur as a result of natural material melting and bleeding through the glaze during the firing process. Depending on the size, intensity and location of one of these discrepancies, will depend on whether a piece is considered first or second quality. The larger a pot becomes, the more area there is for variation to occur on the surface.

Glaze

After a pot is finished in the studio and bisque fired, it is glazed, stacked into the kiln, and unloaded by our kiln team of master potters. Each of our pots is glazed by hand! The seconds that fall under the glazing category are created during this part of our process. When loading glazed pieces into a kiln, glaze can sometimes chip off, exposing a small area of raw clay.

Even though a piece may be missing a patch of glaze, each pot is still fully functional because we fire our claybody to its proper temperature. When a claybody is fully fired it becomes vitrified, keeping all of our pieces completely food safe!
