The Making of Fieldstone: Designed in Vermont, Crafted in Portugal

Every collection starts with a question. For Fieldstone, ours was simple: what would it take to make a table setting that feels like it has always been there? Answering it took us from our studio in Woodstock, Vermont, across the Atlantic to a workshop full of people who have spent their lives with clay, and then home again.

A Trip to Portugal

To bring Fieldstone to life, our founder, James Zilian, and our vice president, Jess Vanderberry, traveled to Portugal to meet the artisan partners who would make it. Portugal has a long and living ceramic tradition, and the workshops there are run by people who learned the craft from the people who came before them.

There is no substitute for being in the room. Sitting with the makers, holding their work, feeling the weight of a cup in the hand, and talking through the collection piece by piece told us more than any sample shipped across the ocean ever could. What came home with them was a collection, and a partnership.

Designed in Vermont

Fieldstone was designed here in Woodstock, where every Farmhouse Pottery collection begins. The forms follow the same instincts that guide our wheel-thrown work: clean lines, comfortable weight, and nothing decorative for its own sake.

A mug you reach for without thinking. A plate that sits right under a weeknight dinner. A baker that comes out of the oven and goes straight to the middle of the table. We designed it for the way people actually eat.

Three Glazes, Drawn from Nature

Fieldstone takes its name from the stone walls that run through Vermont's woods and pastures, stacked by hand and still standing. The glazes come from the same landscape.

Chalk is the soft white of a field in early winter. Hearthstone is warm and earthen, the color of clay near the fire. Millpond is a quiet blue-gray, like still water under an overcast sky. Each one is softly speckled, so no two pieces are exactly alike.

Made to Be Used

Every Fieldstone piece is crafted from 100% lead- and cadmium-free stoneware clay and glaze, and made to move easily through everyday life—from the microwave and oven to the freezer and dishwasher. Because beautiful pottery shouldn’t ask you to be precious with it.

Set the table with it on a Tuesday. That’s exactly what it’s for.
